Amerikazentrum Lecture/Discussion Invitation: June 6th 19h

INVITATION
Lecture / Discussion on ‘The Debate about Food Issues in the U.S.
by Mr. Jerry Hagstrom
Amerikazentrum, Am Sandtorkai 48, 20457 Hamburg
on Monday, June 6, 19:00.

The discussion about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) has raised the issue of food safety on both sides of the Atlantic.  There is little knowledge in Europa about the nature and political thrust of the debate in the U.S.  The implementation of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act remains a subject of ongoing discussion.

There is a vigorous debate whether food with genetically modified ingredients should be labelled, and which level of government should take the lead.  The debate has gained salience as some states are requiring mandatory labelling of GMO foods while there are other initiatives on the federal level.  Some of the compromise solutions may be of interest to European regulators and consumers and may have relevance for transatlantic negotiations.  There is also a vibrant organic movement in the U.S. and organic products gain increasing market share.  The lecture will address these issues and how they relate to policy and public opinion and explore implications for Europe.

Mr. Hagstrom appears frequently on C-SPAN to discuss farm issues, and has appeared on National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Corporation program Farming Today. He has also lectured before major trade groups and at universities including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, the Institute d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (often referred to as Sciences Po), and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, the prestigious training school for French civil servants.

Mr. Hagstrom also writes about politics. He is the co-author with Neal R. Peirce of The Book of America: Inside Fifty States Today, a book on the politics and character of each of the 50 states, and the author of Beyond Reagan: The New Landscape of American Politics. From 1976 until 1988 Mr. Hagstrom was also Mr. Peirce’s associate on his newspaper column, which is syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group.

This is a joint event of Amerikazentrum Hamburg, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and U.S. Consulate General Hamburg.
