The discussion about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) has raised the issue of food safety on both sides of the Atlantic. There is little knowledge in Europa about the nature and political thrust of the debate in the U.S. The implementation of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act remains a subject of ongoing discussion. There is a vigorous debate whether food with genetically modified ingredients should be labelled, and which level of government should take the lead. The debate has gained salience as some states are requiring mandatory labelling of GMO foods while there are other initiatives on the federal level.
